This is the second instalment in the Black Blade series and as the previous book this one falls in the young adult segment although it is less "young" and more mature than a lot of books in this segment. It is an enjoyable read even for adult readers, at least if you have some of that youth spirit left in you. It is written in the usual Jennifer Estep style, which is good, but with a slant towards the younger audience compared to, for example, the Elemental Assassin series. The adventures of Lila continues as she has to unravel more of the plot of Victor Draconi. Just to complicate matters she is entered into the Tournament of Blades competition by the Sinclair family head and there is another sinister player around bent on winning the tournament...by any means necessary. It is a good well written story with a few twists as it progresses. I quite like the various characters on the good side and the chief bad guy is really a nasty piece of work. As I mentioned he is not the only baddie around which leads to a few additional twists making the story all the more interesting. On the whole a well done young adult book which does not fall into the trap of being short on story and generally immature and childish like too many young adult books around.
Actual rating: 4.5 starsDark Heart of Magic is packed to the brim with action and excitement, and is the perfect middle book in the Black Blade series. Jennifer Estep balances the fighting/action with the mafia-style plot wonderfully, and it makes for a great read! This book was a bit different than the first book in the series, as this was centered on the Tournament of Blades, a magic competition that pits each of the Families against each other to see who's the best of the best. While the monsters aren't as involved in this story, each of the character's experience significant growth and development which culminates in some mind-blowing twists by the end of the book. The Tournament of Blades was a very interesting competition, and it made for a great change of pace from the previous book. However, even though the competition made up the majority of the book, it also allowed Ms. Estep to focus more on the mafia-like families and ruling that make up the Black Blade world that she has created. I greatly enjoyed this aspect of the story, and it also allowed Ms. Estep to do some more world-building. Ms. Estep incorporated a fun whodunit into the plot as well, which made this book even more enjoyable! I had my suspicions throughout the book as to who was behind everything, and even though one of my picks ended up being correct, I was still surprised by how everything went down. The entire ending of this novel was brilliant in my opinion. It was packed with twists and turns, followed by a couple very sweet moments. However, my favorite aspect of this book was watching all of the characters evolve and grow in their own unique ways. Jennifer Estep always writes her characters feisty, sassy, and tough, which I absolutely love. All of the characters have me cracking up with their one-liners and adventures. No matter what, her characters are always a breath of fresh air and something new and unique. With every book, Ms. Estep shows more and more depth to each of these characters, and readers are able to feel as if they are friends with them as well. This is something that I always love with books, and I think that it takes a truly gifted author to accomplish this. There are some developments with Lila and Devon in the romance department, and I am very happy with how Ms. Estep has handled their relationship thus far. It has had a natural flow to it, no insta-love. Plus, no love triangle. These two things together make me love this series even more! I absolutely love Lila and Devon together, and I'm interested to see where Ms. Estep takes their relationship in the next book.Dark Heart of Magic is the perfect follow-up to Cold Burn of Magic and is a must-read for all fans of Jennifer Estep and this series. This novel is perfectly paced and has non-stop action and crazy adventures that readers have come to expect from Ms. Estep. You won't be disappointed! The wait for the next book in the series will be killer, and I can't wait to see what happens next!Happy reading :)
Dark Heart of Magic is the second book in the Black Blade trilogy, and it starts out with mystery, monsters, and death. It was so good to be back with Lila, Devon, and Felix. Even Oscar, Lila’s hot-tempered pixie nanny. Enemies, new and old, are plotting and killing and it’s up to Lila to find out the who’s and put a stop to it. Besides, she’s a Sinclair now, and she can’t let the ones she consider family and friends to get hurt. Someone is going around killing monsters, and sabotaging the annual Tournament of Blades. It made for an interesting read.Lila is now bodyguard to Devon Sinclair. She also has a hard time fighting her feelings for him. She keeps telling herself that they are better off as friends, but that attraction is hard to keep at bay. This year, the Sinclair family has chosen Lila, among a few others, to compete in the tournament. Along with this comes jealousy from a fellow family member, and also the taunts from Blake Draconi. I loved all the moments spent with other characters; whether they are friend or foe. The little moments of tension whenever Felix was in the presence of his forbidden lady, were hilarious. As much as Felix flirts, his demeanor completely changes when she’s in the picture. Romeo and Juliet anyone? We can’t forget the life Lila had before becoming wrapped up in mob family rivalries. She was a thief, and darn good at her job. Her knack for finding out things is just part of her scheme.I enjoyed the mystery of this book, and the tournament. I really just wish that Lila would stop dragging out the inevitable when it comes to Devon. I really like him, and he’s so strong and very in tune with her. I just hate the dragging of this romance. If these two won’t end up with each other, then I see no need to even have them pining like this. What’s the point? Other than that, I liked this book very much. Lila is so smart and deadly, to be such a young lady. This book picks up right after book one ended, so it’s not like it’s months apart; but Lila has grown a lot in some aspects, but she also is still this young girl who doesn’t know what to do about her feelings. Devon has definitely changed since the last book. I guess with the immediate threat to his life gone, he’s able to be himself and open up more. He’s hot. Felix is hot. I swear there’s not a single person in this world, male or female, that’s not beautiful. Definitely unrealistic – but this is fiction, so……. If you love urban fantasy, and want something lighter than the adult fiction you’re used to, this trilogy is a great one to read. I think young adults would enjoy this one as well. Recommended!
