I have been listening to this recording for over 15 years. I first listened to it in 1998. Jacob Needleman has an excellent voice for this very well produced reading. I only wish it was available in CD format. I've been waiting for it to become re-mastered into a CD. But it looks like there's no intention to do so. After the first cassettes wore thin and staticky I purchased a 2nd set in 2005. Now those are wearing thin, and my cassette player is giving out. So now I'm looking for a new set, but this time I'm just going to buy a CD version....too bad it won't be Needleman's voice.
This is a taped version. I would love to have it on CD. The BEST narrator by far to listen to.
Needleman's reading of the Bhagavad Gita brings out the beauty of the work. The lack of many of the Indian terms can be disconcerting but in general the translation is very well done.
This is a tough one to rate. Both because of the nature of the book, and because I often have a hard time rating audiobooks. Typically because I'm simply not very good at consuming them yet - I have trouble focusing intensely to long periods of audio information, and I just listened to this entire thing while at work today which probably didn't help my case. To be fair, it is a short listen. And beyond any perceived failure to absorb all of the information I could, this book is loaded with things to absorb, and I'd have wanted to listen to/read it again regardless. The Bhagavad-Gita. The 'Song of God' by most translations; or simply The Gita, 'The Song.' I did a little background research (thanks Wikipedia) before I started; because for as long as this book has been on my radar, I really didn't know too much about it. So, the Gita is a portion of the longer Indian epic Mahabharata, which I've actually heard of. It is one of two famous Indian works often referenced, the other being the Ramayana, and the Gita is perhaps the most famous portion of either of them. It begins as a conversation held between Dhritarashtra and Sanjaya, and quickly evolves into a story of a conversation between Lord Krishna and Arjuna on the field of battle. Arjuna's reluctance to do battle against his friends and kin, with the eventuality of doing them harm or even killing them, results in Krishna imparting much wisdom upon him. Dealing with many themes and topics far beyond Arjuna's reluctance to fight. What seemingly will be a story about a massive battle is anything but, as Krishna teaches Arjuna about discipline, action, oneness, his own godhood, and much else.Books like this, these heavy religious texts, are always kept in perspective for me. I do view it as a story; one with lessons to be learned. But it is also fun to assume the guise of a true believer; to place myself in those shoes and see what there is to see, learn what there is to learn, and absorb all I can. This book, like my recent read of the Tao, has more to offer me. I will revisit it.I'll end the review with a passage from the Tenth Teaching: Fragments of Divine Power, which I particularly enjoyed.Arjuna asks, 'How can I know you, as I meditate on you? In what diverse aspects can I think of you, Krishna?''...Among trees I am the sacred fig tree. I am chief of the divine sages, leader of the celestial musicians, the reckless philosopher among saints... I am the thunderbolt among weapons. Among cattle the magical, wish-granting cow... Of measures I am time... I stand sustaining this entire world with a fragment of my being.'That is beautiful poetry if nothing else. And last but not least I must compliment the narrator, Jacob Needleman. He narrated my first time through the Tao Te Ching, and I have not forgotten him. He is the reason I went for this version in particular. His voice is deep, and it lulls you into an almost mystical cadence. As was his work on the Tao, it is a job well done.
I too love this spoken translation. The debate on the best translation continues on, but this is an inspiring, thought-provoking reading of this classic of spirituality. I wish this were available on CD at a reasonable price.
