About the Author

While attending college at Nihon University, in 1988, Kentaro Miura debuted a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken (Fist Of The North Star).In 1990, the first volume Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga entitled Japan. Miura's fame grew after Berserk began "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of this masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary manga artists.In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan made, ranging from statues and action figures, to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentaro Miura received the second place in the Tezuka Osamu (Astro Boy) Cultural Prize of Excellence for Berserk. The author lives in Tokyo, Japan.

This is the 5th volume in the Berserk series. In this volume we watch over the years as Guts takes greater responsibility in the Band of the Hawk and gains Griffithâ€™s admiration through his awesome fighting skills.This volume culminates in a confrontation between Guts, Griffith and Nosferatu Zodd..aka..Zodd the Immortal. What follows is a spectacular battle scenes that stretches the limits of both Griffith and Gutsâ€™ abilities. After the dust settles the Band of Hawk is in a better position than ever and Griffith is finally getting the adoration from nobility that he craves.I really enjoyed this installment of the Berserk series and continue to be impressed by how much progress each story makes. The illustration continues to be very well done and is easy to follow.As with previous volumes there are a ton of action scenes and they are very gory. This is a manga for mature readers only.Overall this was a spectacular installment in the Berserk series and I continue to enjoy it a lot. I would recommend to manga fans who enjoy action-packed horror/fantasy. I look forward to continuing the series.

Berserk is one of my all-time, if not favorite mangas. This particular chapter feels like a foregone conclusion, but that's only because the characters are shown at the beginning. It's well-done, the artwork of course is very nice and it'll keep you reading. This wasn't meant to be an extremely deep chapter, but instead provide some exposition for the beginning of Berserk and the characters within its Universe. As I said, this chapter might feel like a foregone conclusion with very little twists, but still worth a read. Don't worry, the story gets extremely good, extremely soon.

I see no flaws here. The Golden Age Arc really lives up to it's name.

Berserk by far has been one of my all time favorite mangas. The ANIME was good but in the Mangas they dive further into how GUTS becomes the "Black Swordsman" which is where I really wanted the original Anime to go. Although now with the new Anime movie set coming out, I hope that is where they will take the story, to follow more of his transformation into the Black Swordsman.If you haven't read it, get the series and enjoy.

As a Berserk fan, you need this volume.

READ THE MANGA

This series has a very serious, dark overtone. If you like game of thrones or violent revenge stories, this is for you.

I have to say right away that the fourth volume of Berserk put a terrible taste in my mouth. The opening chapter had a molestation scene that really stole a lot out of the series for me, and the truth is the series didn't even need it. With the way the third volume ended, we already knew what was going to happen. Here, I think implication is key, yet Kentaro Miura and DMP decided to publish such an ugly scene anyways.Thankfully, this series gets into the lighter moments and allowed me to forget about the ugly episode in the last volume. What's found here is the beginnings of the anime, and almost everything in that anime is interpreted to the word from the manga. Though I will say that I felt like I was watching a repeat, it was interesting to see some of the characters in manga format as I read. Plus, these are the lightest moments in all of Guts's dark tale, and you can't help but enjoy it as Guts slowly works himself into the Band of the Hawk. And, like always, the scenes of action are as intense and bloody as expected, only in this volume Guts has a little more at stake than he does in the past volumes, which adds some emotion.Berserk, though now it's in the story well-known to fans, is probably the best fantasy manga around, and though at times it may seem a little too graphic, it does warn you ahead of time with a sticker on the front and an 18+ age suggestion on the back. If you're a fan of fantasy and can handle some very mature situations, then I'd recommend this series for you. Just be careful, because sometimes the content may surprise you.
