This book is fascinating but at times frustrating in that the author does not list the sources so that we may track them down and read for ourselves. Its greatest strength is that it's written in a style that flows, is highly readable, and is clearly the result of much research. Its greatest weakness is the failure to list sources, to inform readers of where and how these sources were found, or to investigate sources beyond media reports. Despite the weak scholarship I have to admit it was a quick and informative read. The book covers the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from the arrival of Maeda in the Americas all the way to UFC1, nearly a century. The author shows how Maeda refined the art of fighting with the back to the ground in response to a need to defeat wrestlers in the Americas. Laydner also clarifies the murky relationship between old-school Japanese jujutsu, Kodokan judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which becomes much more understandable after reading this book. He goes on to describe how The Gracies acquired and developed their Jiu-Jitsu skills and subsequently maintained their distinct ground-based grappling skills, resisting pressure to fold into judo and judo rules. He describes in lavish detail the many fights between Jiu-Jitsu practitioners and other martial arts, the development of vale-tudo, and the eventual popularization of BJJ through its repeated victories in MMA fights. Many of the fights are described almost blow by blow. This is both a strength and a weakness; at times the detail can be wearisome but overall it serves to illustrate when and how certain techniques became important in BJJ, and specifically those that served to defeat other martial arts. Laydner shows how first Maeda identified those parts of traditional jujutsu and Kodokan judo that helped him to defeat American wrestlers, and then how the Gracies further refined these methods through repeated challenges to other martial arts. This is a fascinating and engrossing read for all serious practitioners of martial arts.At the same time, there is no way to verify any of this because Laydner, strangely, fails to list any sources, thereby undermining his own credibility. I have no doubts that the sources, for the most part, say what Laydner says they do; but all scholars make some mistakes, often by writing from memory or through transcription errors, and it is crucial to list sources so that others may verify and build upon their work. This is the book's biggest weakness and the reason for removing a star from the rating. In addition, avid readers of professional history books know that historians always go beyond media reports to delve into other sources such as archives, correspondence, police or government records, and even oral histories. Except for a few instances in which Laydner cites tournament programs, this whole book is based exclusively on media reports, which is also a major weakness. There are a few more minor irritants, such as claiming that traditional Japanese jujutsu became "irrelevant" with the advent of judo, or that Belém do Pará, where Maeda established his school and taught Carlos Gracie, was "a forgotten corner of the world," when at the time its role in the world economy was critical as the source of the world's rubber supplies. Belém then was a lot like Abu Dhabi now, a place made globally significant by the great wealth of a desirable natural resource. There was huge wealth in Pará and merchants and executives from Britain and the U.S. frequented the city as well as its inland cousin, Manaus. Just as Abu Dhabi today has an outsize role in the development of submission grappling, Belém and Manaus back then played an outsize role in the early development of BJJ.Despite my frustration with these weaknesses in the level of scholarly quality, I tore through this book in short order. The number of media reports examined is vast and the panorama that Laydner creates, showing the development of BJJ over a century's time, is mesmerizing and beautiful. The book gripped me, it reads very well. For all its flaws I unhesitantly recommend this book to all those interested in understanding where BJJ came from. This book is a major contribution to martial arts history. If only the author would list the sources or at least the places where the sources can be consulted, I would certainly give it five stars.
This is a detailed account of the birth of BJJ and the events and people who made it happen. It didn't start with the Gracies, and it won't end with them either. That being said, without them BJJ would exist today.
Great in depth historical info on BJJ. Much more detail than most origin stories.
What is interesting about this book is that Jiu Jitsu became a global phenomenon, one which people don`t understand the background and history. Mr. Laydner fills a major void in the current marketplace, which is to bring to the masses the understanding as to how it was possible for this phenomenon to happen. Given the effort put in investigating the history and culture behind this artform, and also given that Mr. Laydner is a Jiu Jitsu blackbelt himself, it will be difficult to rival the depth and detail of this book. For everyone that loves MMA, this is a must read on Jiu Jitsu, which took the global stage by storm, and currently is the only true must-know martial art form for any fighting fan.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is actually an offshoot of Japanese judo clashing with American folk wrestling in the early 1900s -- that's just one of the many eye-opening revelations I was treated to in this book.Meticulous research and profound thought went into this historical undertaking that was a joy to read and an honor to translate. I'm confident others will share my enthusiasm and relish Luiz Otavio Laydner's acute perspective on the events that coalesced to produce Brazilian jiu-jitsu, vale-tudo and ultimately modern-day MMA.
Great book for those who love BJJ and martial arts. Very accurate research about BJJ origins.
A very detailed history on the origins of BJJ. The book is a must read for everyone that loves the sports and MMA, in general.
