I bought the book and the PDToolkit was great. Unfortunately, it stopped working after a few weeks. And then I got this email (I cut a few sentences with contact information)"PD Toolkit Customer,We are writing to update you on the availability of the PDToolkit for Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary and Spelling Instruction, 5/e and Vocabulary Their Way: Word Study with Middle and Secondary Students, 2/e.Over the past several months a number of our customers have experienced persistent issues with the PDToolkit that have made the product very difficult, and in some cases impossible, to use. On behalf of Pearson, we would like to apologize for these issues and for the inconvenience they may have caused you and your students. Our technology team has uncovered the underlying causes of the issues and is hard at work making the necessary repairs to the site. The PDToolkit will be temporarily unavailable while the repairs are being made. In the interim, we are taking the following steps to ensure you have access to the content you need.•On January 5, 2015 we will release a new interim site to provide access to the PDToolkit videos and PDF content. Please visit http://pdtoolkit.pearson.com/update/index.html to access the interim site.•If you need access to the PDToolkit PDF content prior to January 5, 2015, please email Education.Service@pearson.com to request the content you need. Please be as specific as possible so we can quickly and accurately fulfill your request.Once we have resolved the issues with the PDToolkit, we will re-release the site in spring 2015. We will keep you updated on our progress and provide more details on the timeframe for the re-release as they become available at http://pdtoolkit.pearson.com/update/index.html. When the site is re-launched, all registered users will have their access extended for 12 additional months at no charge.Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to resolve these issues. "I do not have patience in fact and understanding as I bought it to help my 1st grade daughter during the school year. She needs the sorts now not in a few months. I emailed them to get specific sorts but I did not received any answer (very easy to be sent as a pdf but I got nothing). It is a pity because the flow of the book is good and the few sorts that I was able to print at the beginning were very helpful.
I bought this book three months ago and the PD Toolkit is still unavailable to me. "Coming soon" seems to be misleading - I am not sure what Amazon's definition of "soon" is... But I am already halfway through my semester and I still have no access to the PD Toolkit. That being said, the PD Toolkit has not proven to be necessary for my studies, so thankfully the lack of access is not too detrimental: while the Toolkit offers extra resources, those resources are summarized in the book (it seems the toolkit more or less just provides examples of what is written in the book, as well as printable materials). However, it would certainly be a nice addition to have, especially at such a high cost and it is referred to A LOT throughout the book.I would recommend buying the book from elsewhere.
I wanted to update: now that the pd toolkit is available the book is much more useful. They gave me a full 12 month access as soon as it became available.I owned the previous edition of this book, which is fabulous. I purchased the new edition mainly for access to the online toolkit. When I logged in with my access code it took me to the toolkit for the Words Their Way edition that is not for ELLs. WHile I used it it does not match any of the activities listed in the book. In the previous edition there were word lists and templates in the back of the book, in this edition you must access them online, but they are not available. I worked with Pearson support for a year and still have not gotten access.
Don't bother buying from Amazon, it doesn't include the PD toolkit access code. The book is useless without it, you're better off buying it form Pearson.
**In short, don't bother to buy this book unless you are a college professor. This book only give the background of how to use word sorts but provides practically no useful sorts or activities. If you actually want to experiment with using word sorts in your class, this book is useless.**The PDToolkit is supposed to contain games, word groups, and videos helpful to teachers, and was the reason I bought this book. Nowhere did the publisher say within the book that access is restricted to the online toolkit (which they so enthusiastically promote). The PDtoolkit that is referenced throughout this book is not available online to purchasers. When I tried to access it, I had to go through customer support, and then a representative of the publisher had to verify with my school that I was working as a teacher. Then they contacted me, asying that usually they only grant access to the Toolkit to college professors, but they MIGHT make an exception. Now I have to fill out a survey that includes questions on whether my school is planning to purchase their books in bulk before they consider granting me access.I am extremely dissatisfied with this book due to the false claims of access to resources by the publisher.
I purchased this book in hopes that it would be different from the traditional words their way books that I already own. I was really hoping to have access to the pdtoolkit, but it is still not accessible. It was supposed to be available in October 2011. I purchased the book in February of 2012, and the toolkit is still not accessible. This is the main reason why I am not satisfied with my purchase.
The online key didn't work and tech support was not helpful at all
Do NOT purchase this book online. You must purchase the PD Toolkit separately, and the book is virtually useless without it.Very disappointed with this purchase, but unable to get a refund. Basically, over $30 thrown in the garbage.
