This is a very comprehensive book that will appeal to aficionados and practitioners of stitch resist techniques at all levels. Jane Callender has spent decades learning, practicing and perfecting the techniques of shibori. This book focuses on stitch techniques--surface design created with needle, thread and dye pot--that can be used to reproduce classic Japanese, Indian, Indonesian, African and Chinese patterns. Or you can work in the way that Jane Callender has, learning how to create original patterns and designs.Yes, there's eye candy! But there is also excellent instruction. If you are a beginner, never fear. She instructs you in fabric preparation, show you how to tie knots and pull up threads. Then she takes you through many possible variations of mokume shibori, working with single layers, curves, folds and pleats to create repeat patterns. There's oversewing, binding, capping, working with double needles, shapes on folds and this leads to instruction on motif development. Grids can be used for stitching, folding, working with double layers. Machined resists of many variations are illustrated and discussed. Patterns become more interesting with folding, pleating, wrapping, capping. The latter one-third of the book is devoted to dye techniques and pattern development. Make no mistake about it--this is the book would-be shibori practitioners have been waiting for since the publication in 1983 of Yoshiko Wada's "Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing" and it is much more helpful from a practical standpoint than the follow on book that Wada wrote, "Memory on Cloth: Shibori Now". It is also more comprehensive than Mandy Southan's "Shibori: Design and Techniques" or Janice Gunner's "Shibori for Textile Artists," both of which are good books in their own right. Highly recommended.
I'm so glad I decided to get this book! As soon as I saw it was an entire book on my favorite technique, I impulsively bought it and immediately worried that it might not be worth it. Then it got here and I was instantly reassured flipping through it. It just has so much more than I expected, including a section in the back on using natural dyes and setting up indigo vats and suchlike. I want to go through this book and try all the techniques shown, like a textbook! There are some really amazing stitched-resist pieces in this book; this is the first shibori book I felt like was worth owning outside of Yoshiko Wada's shibori book!
Wow! I have purchased Jane Callender's shibori templates and have enjoyed them, easy to follow, etc.. BUT her book is fabulous!! She takes you from beginning to end of the process.. There are so many different stitching patterns and well explained/detailed pictures and instructions. I can't wait to get started!! She also includes sections on Indigo dyeing, natural dyeing, fiber reactive....This book is for beginning shibori stitchers or those just wanted to learn!!!
This is truly an extraordinary book! If you want an in-depth look at shibori techniques and options for dying shibori, this book is fabulous. It includes detailed stitching instruction, lots of photos, instructions for different dyeing techniques (synthetic and organic indigo, among others). Jane Callender is a renowned shibori expert and she generously shares her knowledge gained from a lifelong study of shibori in this beautiful book. Jenny Balfour-Paul says in the forward, "It will become a classic on shibori, widely consulted worldwide and savoured and treasured for years to come." I couldn't agree more!
Great technique and dying book! For a beginning dyer, this book might be a little too advanced. Some knowledge of Shibori and dying would help or JUST buy the book to have out it is that beautiful! The photographs are clear and crisp, easy to read instructions, and well laid out. I will recommend this book to any of my Fiber art friends.
I got addicted to dying fabric last year. I started experimenting patterns with the help of Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing the past summer. A great book going over vary traditional Shibori but the problem the tools and methods wer too ancient and hard to find and instructions overly explanatory.This book takes what I learned from that book to the next level going far more in-depth with good clear simple instructions and shows many different variations of the patterns. I love all the pictures they really show how far some stitching can go. I cant wait to show this book and what I did with it to my fashion teachers in the spring semester.
A comprehensive collection of shibori techniques. I've only just started working with some of the techniques, and I think this book will keep me occupied for a long time. I'm not a beginner, but I think this book meets the needs of a variety of skill levels.
This was a gift for a person just starting out with this type of stichery. She had personally requested the book to complete a project she was working on. The book not only helped her complete her project but also inspired her to begin others that she was uncomfortable starting in the past.
