Are you a woman between 35 and 50 experiencing PMS, migraine headaches, sudden weight gain, fatigue, irritability, tender or lumpy breasts, memory loss, fibroids, or cold hands and feet? If so, you may be experiencing symptoms of premenopause. Even if you're a decade or more away from menopause, your hormones may already be out of balance, usually caused by an excess of estrogen and a deficiency of progesterone, say the authors of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause. John Lee, M.D., is a well-known advocate of the benefits of natural progesterone and the author of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause. Jesse Hanley, M.D., adds sensitivity to the emotional and spiritual aspects of premenopause. The authors recommend natural progesterone cream to balance your hormones, eliminate premenopausal symptoms, and make you feel better. They also discuss the dangers of xenohormones--substances not found in nature that have hormonal effects--frequently found in pesticides, solvents, plastics, and hormone-treated meat. The book presents common symptoms of premenopause with suggested natural treatments (progesterone cream, diet, vitamins, and herbs) and substances to avoid, plus additional chapters on diet and exercise. Many case studies help to bring the information into perspective. If you are premenopausal (or close to someone who is), this is a valuable resource. --Joan Price

I really wanted to like this book - but so much of it is just common sense that you hear everywhere. Eat right, exercise, reduce stress, blah, blah, blah. Much of the information is just very generalized stuff you can find anywhere. There is a small section on the use of progesterone cream that's a bit helpful and your doctor may not know about since it doesn't require a prescription (at least my doctor had never heard of it). But that's really the only useful info I found. Also in my opinion there are FAR TOO MANY seemingly made-up "case studies" about woman and their personal stories that are completely useless. I wish I hadn't spent the money on this book.
Some information in the book may not interest you as it did not for me. I was only interested in my symptoms & if it was normal. They are normal.I was fortunate this year to change to another a gyno, a gentleman who has years of practice, who explained my symptoms to me just as in this book.He is the only doctor who has ordered a full thyroid blood test & a sonogram & we discovered that I have a thyroid issue. I also have a thickened epidermis. Whereas the other doctors simply said "it's age & your pap is normal, keep on with your life."This book helped me understand my issues & how to address them. I upped on my vitamin E & Flaxseed. My advice is to find a great gyno. They specialize more in the "female hormones" area. I know that is hard these days but there are good doctors out there.
A must read for all women from 13 up. dispels myths about female hormones, applauds their value and tells us how amazing our bodies are while explaining how pharmacology makes money from our natural stages in life. Could prevent a great deal of pain, emotionally and physically.
Very effective book that helps with understanding the true causes of premenopause and real strategies for dealing with it. If you like a more integrative/preventive/natural approach this is a great read. Don't be discouraged by conventional MD's lack of real solutions (synthetic drugs/unnecessary surgeries) for the way you're feeling. There is help and there are practitioners that understand.
This book has been extremely helpful for me as I was trying to figure out why my anxiety has increased to panic attacks to insomnia. Sweats at night and of course crying at times for no good reason. This book is very useful and informative for every women .You will have a much better understanding what changes your body and mind are going through that some Doctors just either don't feel it's that important or disregard any concerns you may be having.I have gotten more info from this book than I would any Doctor. This was very informative and a book I will always keep close by incase I need to re read something that may have slipped my mind.
Very helpful as hormone levels were acting abnormally. They would peak in mid cycle, never peaking when they normally should be. I've been suffering since age 26, had minor surgery at 32. Now at 38 I've got the tools go get on with a normal life. I had missed so much witprk that I've list 2 jobs in past 3 years. Take control of your life with this book; as I've learned that I've had 3 Drs who never listened to me. They told me it's normal I said no way!! Wish I'd had this information when it was published in 1999.
As being over 40, reading such a book is mandatory. Finally, I started to understand that the health problems that appeared in the last 2 years were actually caused by the hormonal changes specific to premenopause. Although very comprehensive on entire hormonal system, I had the feeling that, most of the time, the progesterone is recommended as the solution for every problem. Great book. Will see if natural progesterone is indeed so good in reducing premenopausal troubles.
I purchased this book about 10 years ago and tried to get my girls to read it. Now that they are reaching 40 they finally decided to read it. It is saving my daughter's marriage. Her hair, attitude, weight and eating habits have dramatically changed. I highly recommend this book for every woman over 25 years of age.
I love this book, this was a true eyeopener for me. For years I was wondering why I was suddenly suffer from symptoms, because I 'm still to young to go through this. This book explains everything really well and will gives you a lot of advise to deal with the problem and start to live again.
