I love new slants on old fairytales. This one retells Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen†set against a glittering Frost Faire on the winter-frozen Thames in London. There are booths with food and hot beverages musicians, and a theatre troupe including a young hopeful ballerina is perfoming ‘A Midwinter Night’s Dreamâ€. The ballerina Elyse/Gerda is in love with a man she thinks is a wealthy nobleman. She has a best friend Kai with whom she has grown up,and to whom she is very close. He, a physician, although he is attractive and pursued by women, remains aloof to all but Elyse. When he is summoned to attend upon the female captain of a ship frozen in the ice, she tries to seduce him, keeping him drugged until, she hopes, he, resistant, will surrender to her advances. Meanwhile, Elyse finds that her suitor is not who he appeared to be. Missing Kai, with whom she could always share her feelings, doubts, and concerns and whom she is beginning to realize, she has always loved, seeing that he has not returned for some time from attending on the captain of the ship, goes in search of him and with the help of the Captain’s husband, a Baron, sets out to rescue her true love, who upon awakening from his drugged state, confesses that he never succumbed to Captain Bahra's overripe enticements because he has always loved only Elyse. The Snow Queen is Captain Bahra, and she and her husband the Baron in a parallel to Oberon and Titania in the play presented by the theater troupe are at the beginning, are in the midst of a quarrel over the young boy, Robin, which is resolved at the end,With the icy Thames thawed, the Captain and the Baron, reconciled, sail away. Kai and Elyse are married, and all ends well. Andersen’s mirror is present, but as a gift presented to Elyse/Gerda by the grateful; nobleman she rescued from being drowned by her former suitor who had fraudulently attempted to assume his identity. Bottom is present as the mule pulling the cart that Elyse drives to the ice-locked ship to rescue Kai. A sparking icy winter faire, romance, glitter, and a fairytale meshed with Shakespearian characters in new disguises: What’s not to love?
Wow! Melanie Karsak is a talented writer! She successfully weaves Shakespeare with fairy tales in this historical fantasy romance. She includes layers of magic and science, theater and real life. Your heart goes out to the characters and new ones get introduced along the way making you wonder how they all fit together. This also adds to the suspense and I found my heart thumping hard in different scenes. It's a twisted story that will keep you in knots until the end!Posted on Amanda's Books and MoreP.S. I recommend this book for older teenagers and up, because of the mature content.
This book was wonderful! I have not read Snow Queen so I can't compare the two stories, but the "steampunk" aspect was very minimal. Despite this fact, the story was highly entertaining! Loved it!
I very much liked the characters, the setting, and the plot. Very entertaining. Highly recommended.
I don't even know were to being with this book. The cover is amazing! I am so in love with this cover, everything about it. It's gorgeous! I am quickly falling in love with Melanie Karsak's writing, I haven't read any retelling quite like her take on fairytales. This one was about the snow queen and it did not disappoint. Elysa & Kai...sigh...Kai....I loved this world and I adored both characters. I loved the love story and the twist at the end. I wish it had more of the "snow queen" but over all I just loved everything about this book. I wanted to be in this world for a while. Elysa is an actress and the Thames freezes which bring the 1814 London Frost Fair. Elysa performs at the Ice House Theatre, she is being courted by a gentleman that she is head over heals in love with but her BFF Kai that lives on the other side of her window isn't so sure about this gentleman since he wants to keep the relationship a secret. Kai is protective of Elysa but he allows her to do what she wants however you can tell he is in love with her. The story is loosely based on the Snow Queen fairytale. It's like you can sense the story underneath the wonderful story that she has created. I honesty hated when this book ended. Overall, I thought this was an amazing story, I loved all the characters and the twist that I didn't see coming at all. I can't recommend this book enough. Between this book and her Curiouser and Curiouser book, I am loving her stories, I can't wait to read more from her.Â
I love, love, love this story! This romantic fairy tale is set in 1814 London, with the beautiful Frost Fair as its backdrop. Take some lovable characters, a dash of steampunk and paranormal, swirl it all together with Shakespearean drama and you’ve got a Shakespeare play come-to-life!The paperback cover is stunning! Hints of the story—frozen roses, a special mirror—frame a gorgeous ballet performer with Tower Bridge, the most iconic bridge in London, as the backdrop. All of the elements came together beautifully.I highly recommend Ice and Embers to anyone who likes fairy tales. It's a great story for those who enjoy a bit of paranormal and steampunk with their romance, and especially for those who like stories set in the Victorian era.
Unlike the other novels in this series, this story is missing all the intriguing steampunk elements that make Karsak's books so great. It's not terribly written, but it shouldn't be labeled steampunk if it's missing all the steampunk.
